AER Community Update Re: Harvest Incident

May 10, 2024 | Announcement

An update from Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) to the Conklin community regarding AER’s response to the Harvest Operations’ uncontrolled release of steam.

As mentioned last week, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, there was an uncontrolled release of steam and bitumen droplets from a well at the Harvest’s Blackgold facility. The release lasted for several days and was stopped on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Since the incident began, Harvest has been in daily communication with the AER and their inspectors have been to Harvest’s Facility regularly.

Harvest has provided us with the following plans:

  • An ongoing plan to monitor the areas surrounding the release, that includes sampling requirements.
  • Wildlife Protection Plan
  • Decontamination Plan
  • Communication Plan

AER continues to monitor Harvest’s communication, remediation and clean-up activities following the incident, in line with the activities listed in the above plans.
The incident has now been posted to the AER’s dashboard.
