Identification of Environmental Monitoring Locations

The CRDAC, through Higher Grounds Consulting is looking for community support to confirm environmentally important locations in the Conklin region that may be impacted by the surrounding oil leases. Conklin has an existing monitoring program that is paid for by Alberta Environment and Parks’ Oil Sands Monitoring Program that examines impact to water quality and quantity, wildlife and vegetation. Conklin has received additional funding to expand this program in order to monitor an increased number of community-identified sites.

If you are concerned about the impacts of oil sands development on the water you drink, animals and fish you consume and the plants and berries that you harvest, we are asking you to help us in the selection of the next locations to be monitored.

On August 11, 2021, Kim Desjarlais and Cameron Johnston of Higher Ground Consulting will be at the CRDAC office to gain this valuable information through discussion and the use of maps. For those members willing to participate by providing sensitive locations in need of monitoring, the household will receive a ½ day honorarium for their contributions ($150 for non-elders and $200 per elder).

First meeting will be at 10am until noon and the second meeting will be 1:30pm to 3:30pm, limited to 5 people per meeting.

This activity will help protect the valuable natural resources and subsistence living in and around Conklin.

Our team has been fully vaccinated and will be following recommended COVID protocols for all visits.
